The Dead Pool
Background
For
Inspector 'Dirty' Harry Callahan, fame and celebrity status is not his
lifestyle, especially when it interferes with his job. But right after putting
one of San Francisco's crime bosses in prison, Callahan ends up in the status
quo as well as being written in a list for a game called, 'The Dead Pool',
where his life is now in the line along with other famous celebrities that are
mysteriously dying. Callahan is up against the media attention, an enraged hit
man, and a new killer, who's attempting to throw off the dead pool game anyway
possible. Callahan has to find the connection between the killings and the
perpetrator, before the game can be declared over.
Directed by: Buddy Van Horn.

Quotes
-Peter Swan:
Do you mind, gentlemen? I happen to be at a funeral.
-Harry
Callahan: Like to talk to you about your list.
-Peter Swan:
It's no big secret. Most of the cast and crew knew about it. I didn't tell you
because the dead pool is just a harmless game.
-Harry
Callahan: Sounds pretty sick to me.
-Peter Swan:
Let me tell you something, Callahan. People... people are fascinated with death
and violence. That's why my films make money. They're an escape, a vicarious
release of fear. Same thing with this game. Nobody takes my films *or* the dead
pool seriously.
-Harry
Callahan: Well, someone gave Squares the drugs that killed him - maybe it was
you.
-Peter Swan:
You can't tie me into Johnny's death just because of a coincidence. My
assistant and my effects supervisor were playing the game too, why don't you
talk to them?
-Harry
Callahan: Oh, we will - but nobody on their list is dead yet.
-Peter Swan:
Hey, look, Callahan, Johnny was a major drugs user, and I predicted he'd die
this year, but that's all I did. Don't you get it? The whole idea is to pick
celebrities who aren't going to make it, because they're old, or because
they're sick or because they're in a high-risk profession.
-Harry
Callahan: Like police work?
-Peter Swan:
Nothing personal, love.
-Harry
Callahan: I don't like your list, Swan. I don't like being on it.
-Peter Swan:
Ah, that's, that's what this is really all about, isn't it? Well, if you got a
charge to make...
-Harry
Callahan: Maybe I'll start my own dead pool, and put you on it.
-Peter Swan:
You threatening me?
-Harry
Callahan: You want to play the game, you'd better know the rules, love.
-Capt.
Donnelly: 13,453 dollars and 63 cents. That's how much an unmarked squad car
costs this department. That's the third goddamned car you trashed this month.
-Harry
Callahan: Lou Janero.
-Capt. Donnelly:
What?
-Harry
Callahan: It's his men who shot up the car, why don't you send him the bill?
-Suzanne
Dayton: [hysterical with grief and restrained by uniformed officers] No! No!
[Samantha
and her camera crew surround Suzanne, the camera is inches from her face]
-Samantha
Walker: [to her cameraman] I said keep shooting, right in there.
[Callahan,
angry, wades into the melee]
-Harry
Callahan: Back off with that camera!
-Samantha
Walker: Hey! I can film whatever I want! Keep shooting!
-Harry
Callahan: I said knock the camera off...
[something
unintelligible as he wrestles the camera away and hurls it as far as he can. It
bounces down some steps and breaks apart]
-Samantha
Walker: Smart.
-Harry
Callahan: [after partner karated a crook] Well, personally I think teaming up
with a Chinese American is good for the department's image.
-Capt.
Donnelly: [with sheet of paper] You know what this is, Callahan? It's a bill
for a TV camera and lens. When I told you to stop wrecking our cars, I didn't
mean go out and find something else to destroy!
-Harry
Callahan: They were interfering with an official investigation, Sir.
-Lt.
Ackerman: Don't give us that. Is this your idea of cooperation with the media?
-Harry
Callahan: Cooperation works two ways, Lieutenant.
-Lt.
Ackerman: Just what is it you have against reporters, Callahan?
-Harry
Callahan: Well some of them are just marvellous people. But others like to walk
through a pile and track it through an investigation. I don't like that.
-Lt.
Ackerman: Well you'd better change your attitude fast, Callahan, because unless
we come to some kind of an agreement with these people, it's just liable to
cost this city two million dollars and your career!
[ushers in
reporter]
-Lt.
Ackerman: Would you join us please? This is Miss Samantha Walker of Station
KWSF. Captain Donnelly...
Capt.
Donnelly: Miss Walker...
-Samantha
Walker: Captain...
-Lt.
Ackerman: And this is Inspector...
-Samantha
Walker: ...Callahan. Yes, we've met.
-Lt.
Ackerman: Oh yes, of course. Will you sit down?
-Samantha
Walker: Oh, thank you.
-Capt.
Donnelly: Miss Walker, ah, Lt. Ackerman here tells me you have a proposal to
make, er, regarding the accidental damage to a television camera.
-Samantha
Walker: [sweetly] Oh, there was nothing accidental about it, Captain.
-Capt.
Donnelly: Well, I think the department might have something else to say about
that.
-Samantha
Walker: Well, although the camera itself was destroyed, I have the entire
incident on video.
Capt.
Donnelly: I see.
[glares at
Callahan]
-Capt.
Donnelly: And your proposal?
-Samantha
Walker: We may be willing to drop the lawsuit against the city... but that all
depends on Inspector Callahan.
-Lt.
Ackerman: Well I'm sure the Inspector would be more than willing to cooperate
in any...
-Harry
Callahan: Just what do you have in mind?
Samantha
Walker: Dinner.
[the men
all stare at one other]
-Samantha
Walker: [after Harry signed personal autograph] Was this your first autograph?
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah, and I hope my last.
-Gus
Wheeler: [drenched in gasoline and with flare] You all stay back! Everyone!
It's gonna go up. Where's the news crew? You better get them here! I mean it,
now!
-Harry
Callahan: Ed Butler may be an alias for Rook.
[gets in
Capt. Donnelly's car]
-Capt.
Donnelly: [standing beside car holding car's radio microphone] Harry, where are
you going? Harry? Harry!
[the mike
lead snaps as Callahan drives off]
-Capt.
Donnelly: That's my car!
-Harlan
Rook: Did you ever notice how time seems to slow down at night?
-Harry
Callahan: Do you have any kids, lieutenant?
-Lt.
Ackerman: Me? No.
-Harry
Callahan: Lucky for them.
-Harry
Callahan: [friendly] You forgot your fortune cookie!
-Gunman #1:
[confused, yells] What?
-Harry
Callahan: It says...
[pauses]
-Harry
Callahan: "You're shit outta luck!"
[Harry
shoots him]
-Peter Swan:
[to Harry and his partner] Why the *fuck* are you people harassing me?
-Harry
Callahan: [points out the biggest, nastiest-looking guy in the prison to
Janero] See that gorilla down there? That's Butcher Hicks... and he's killed
three men. You know how he did it? He tore 'em apart with his teeth! Didn't
even find all the pieces... you might say he has an unhealthy appetite.
-Lou Janero:
[nervous, but trying not to show it] So what?
-Harry
Callahan: So Hicks there is my new pen pal. I'm going to be sending him a letter
once a week, and I'm going to be telling him how I'm gonna be looking in on his
sick mother, and how I'm trying to get him special privileges here at the
prison. And you know what's the interesting part? The interesting part is if
anything happens to me, and Hicks doesn't get his letter, he's going to be
really pissed off, and he's going to come down here and see you because you're
the mail man. In fact he'll probably come down here to this post office and
cancel your ass like a stamp. So you'd better ensure prompt, courteous
delivery, and pray that nothing happens to me.
-Butcher
Hicks: [Harry pays Hicks his box of smokes for just standing] That's it?
-Harry
Callahan: That's it. Oh, you see that dirtbag I was talking to down there?
[points to
Janero]
-Harry
Callahan: He says that smoking can cause cancer, and anyone who smokes as much
as you do is one dumb son-of-a-bitch!
[Hicks
growls menacingly and stares daggers at Janero who shuts himself back in his
cell]
[arguing
with Johnny Squares]
-Peter Swan:
This is not a rip-off. It's a homage, you stupid...
-Harry
Callahan: Well, opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one.
-Harry
Callahan: Do you like cops?
-Samantha
Walker: As long as they're not in my rearview mirror.
-Harlan
Rook: Now you've locked yourself in, asshole!
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah. Just you and me, asshole.
-Harry
Callahan: You're out of bullets. And you know what that means... you're shit
outta luck.
-Harry
Callahan: Fuck with me, buddy, I'll kick your ass so hard you'll have to
unbutton your collar to shit.
-Harry
Callahan: She's right. Oh you can set yourself into a bonfire, we'll break out
the marshmallows and the weenies, but you ain't gonna be on "News at
Eleven".
-Peter Swan:
Don't worry, Johnny's like a trained seal. Throw him a fish, he'll perform.
-Insp. Al
Quan: It's like I was telling you, Harry. Celebrities, they always die in...
-Harry
Callahan: ...in threes.
-Insp. Al
Quan: At least the guy went out with...
-Harry
Callahan: ...a bang. Yeah, I know.
-Capt.
Donnelly: Where's Rook?
-Harry
Callahan: He's hanging out back there.
-Harry
Callahan: Oh you can set yourself into a bonfire and we'll break out the
marshmallows and the weenies but you ain't gonna be on News at Eleven.
-Harlan
Rook: [while holding Samantha hostage, in his arm] You let me down, "Mr.
Famous Fuckin' Cop". You let Swan, get away!

Callahan
checks to make sure his Model 29 was indeed empty by pulling the trigger. This
isn't a recommended method though, since if it isn't empty, a nasty surprise
awaits. Another note is that, in a continuity error reminiscent of the original
film, Callahan pulls the trigger in double-action, despite the gun previously
being cocked to single-action state by Rook.

When crime
kingpin Lou Janero's (Anthony Charnota) henchmen open fire at Insp. Callahan
(Clint Eastwood) during their attempts to kill him at a freeway exit, some of
them are armed with IMI Uzi submachine guns. Later when Callahan is with

Background
A vicious
serial-killer is on the loose in San Francisco and the police trace a link to a
small town further down the coast. When Harry Callahan upsets the press and the
mayor in his usual style, he's shipped out of town to investigate while the
heat is on. With the help of his new Magnum handgun Harry goes on the trail
leaving behind the usual trail of dead criminals along the way.

Quotes
-Harry
Callahan: Listen, punk. To me you're nothin' but dogshit, you understand? And a
lot of things can happen to dogshit. It can be scraped up with a shovel off the
ground. It can dry up and blow away in the wind. Or it can be stepped on and
squashed. So take my advice and be careful where the dog shits ya!
-Crook:
[during a diner robbery] What's you doing, you pighead sucka?
-Harry
Callahan: Every day for the past ten years, Loretta there's been giving me a
large black coffee, today she gives me a large black coffee only it has sugar
in it, a lotta sugar. I just came back to complain. Now, you boys put those
guns down.
-Crook: Say
what?
-Harry
Callahan: Well, we're not just gonna let you walk out of here.
-Crook:
Who'se we sucka?
-Harry
Callahan: [slowly drawing his .44 Magnum] Smith and Wesson... and me.
-D'Ambrosia:
When are you gonna learn, Harry? Sixth sense doesn't count any more. You can't
bust suspects because you *think* they're dirty. *Psychic* don't *cut it*!
-Lt.
Donnelly: Harry, these bastards are not a bunch of junkies. In their minds you
killed Threlkis, same as if you pulled the trigger. They're not gonna stop,
they're gonna keep comin' after you.
-Harry
Callahan: Good, that way we'll know where they are.
-Lt.
Donnelly: You're incredible Callahan!
-Horace
King: So I heard you got a forced vacation.
-Harry
Callahan: [takes his magnum gun out] Uh-huh.
-Horace
King: You still use the Magnum .44?
-Harry
Callahan: Pretty powerful. You want see?
-Horace
King: Sure.
-Harry
Callahan: [shoots a tree stump and some metal. Tons of wood splinters go all
over the place in the bullets make shattering circles in the metal!]
-Horace
King: Look, you got start being careful. I think you really should go on
vacation.
-Harry
Callahan: Forget it. I never take a vacation.
-Horace
King: Well either that or quit.
-Harry
Callahan: That's good idea right there. I really should quit. Then I can handle
the law my own way.
-Horace
King: Yeah, but then you'll be a JAMF.
-Harry
Callahan: Uh huh. And what is a JAMF?
-Horace
King: Jive ass mother...
-Harry
Callahan: [cutting off just in time] Forget I asked.
-Hawkins:
I'll show you how good dog shit is now, Callahan!
-Lt.
Donnelly: So this is your idea of rest and relaxation? Peace and quiet?
-Harry
Callahan: [exasperated] Look, am I on the job or not?
-Lt.
Donnelly: Yes, you are.
-Harry
Callahan: Good. Then I'll get on it.
-Lt.
Donnelly: It's not what you think. Remember that cock-shot stiff up near the
cliff house?
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah.
-Lt.
Donnelly: He's been in the city for a few years now. Mostly clean, but
definitely out in the shade. He seems strictly small-time. But maybe he just
didn't get caught.
-Harry
Callahan: What's your point?
-Lt.
Donnelly: He came from San Paolo, born and raised. I want you to get down there
and find out whatever you can.
-Harry
Callahan: What is THIS bullshit?
-Lt.
Donnelly: It's a murder case, Harry! Look, you wanna work, then work! You got
you assignment, get on it!
-Lt.
Donnelly: [as Harry is leaving] Take all the time you need. You don't have to
hurry back!
-Senior Man:
Best dang bus ride since I got put in that damn home.
-Chief
Lester Jannings: So you're the famous Harry Callahan. So I'm going to tell you
two things. We don't have any trouble in this town and we don't need any from
you. Got it?
-Harry
Callahan: [bitter] Aye-aye, sir.
-Harry Callahan:
[enters his darkened hotel room]
-Harry's dog
(Meat Head): [growls]
-Harry
Callahan: [flicks on the light to see a white English bulldog with a small card
attached to him saying - A GIFT FOR YOU]
-Harry
Callahan: [looks at card]
[ENJOY -
FROM HORACE]
-Harry
Callahan: Damn you, Horace!
-Harry's dog
(Meat Head): [starts spraying on the rug]
-Harry
Callahan: Swell.
-Ray
Parkins: [winning at darts] Yeah! I win again! What'd I tell you? Bull's eye. I
always kick the shit out of you people. Who wants to play next?
-Ray
Parkins: [asks a guy] How about you?
[slaps him]
-Ray
Parkins: Huh?
[guy
doesn't reply]
-Ray
Parkins: Shit, then, don't answer me.
-Bar Guy #2:
I'll play you.
-Ray
Parkins: Yeah, right! You suck! You couldn't even hit a pile of bullshit.
-Ray
Parkins: [approaching Callahan] Well hey there, cutie. Wanna buy me a drink?
-Harry
Callahan: [uninterested] Not today.
-Ray
Parkins: Come on, sailor. There must be something you want to ask me. You might
get lucky!
-Harry
Callahan: Only with humans.
-Ray
Parkins: [to blond-haired suspect] You dipped your wick just like the rest of
them!
-Ray Parkins:
[pulls on blond-haired suspect's crotch] Watch'em real good.
-Harry
Callahan: [picks up print and then heads towards chief's office, where the
chief cordially awaits for him]
-Chief
Lester Jannings: Come in.
-Harry
Callahan: [enters]
-Chief Lester
Jannings: Lock the door.
-Harry
Callahan: [just closes the door]
-Chief
Lester Jannings: Sit down.
-Harry
Callahan: [does]
[a few
seconds later, the phone on the chief's desk buzzes and one of the buttons
lights up]
-Chief
Lester Jannings: [picks the phone up, presses the button that lit up, and gives
the reciever to Harry] It's for you.
-Lt.
Donnelly: [on phone]
-Lt.
Donnelly: [on phone] Harry, what in Sam Hill is going on over there? You've
really caused a lot of anger to the chief.
-Harry
Callahan: [stunned looks back at chief]
-Chief
Lester Jannings: [shows no sympathy]
-Lt.
Donnelly: [now soothing] Now, look. Go easy on him. He's an old man. Now do you
understand?
-Harry
Callahan: No. I don't understand. Any of it.
-Chief
Lester Jannings: [watches Harry go with a flustered look]
[Callahan
dares a crook to shoot his hostage]
-Harry
Callahan: Go ahead, make my day.
-Historical
Society Woman: It must give you a great amount of satisfaction to make old ugly
things right again.
-Jennifer
Spencer: Yes, sometimes it does.
-Ray
Parkins: Give me what you got, twat lips, or I'll make your face have its first
period!
-Police
Commissioner: Inspector, your methods are unconventional to say the least. Oh,
you get results. But often your successes are more costly to this department in
terms of expenses and physical destruction than most other men's failures.
-Police
Commissioner: I think it would be wise if the Inspector took some time off.
-Harry
Callahan: Are you suspending me, sir?
-Police
Commissioner: No, I'm saying you take a vacation until this cools off.
-Harry
Callahan: But I'm not up for a vacation!
-Police
Commissioner: Callahan, I'm not going to fence with you. Take a few days off.
-Captain
Briggs: Don't you lecture me, you son of a bitch! Do you know who I am? Do you
know my record?
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah... you're a legend in your own mind.
-Harry
Callahan: Do you know the emergency phone number for San Francisco General?
Well, why don't you call them right now and have them send down an ambulance.
Tell them there's two sorry-looking assholes here with multiple contusions and
various abrasions and broken bones.
-Bar Patron:
[after slugging Ray Parkins] Are you looking for trouble, pal?
-Harry
Callahan: I'm looking for friends of George Wilburn.
-Bar Patron:
What'd he do?
-Harry
Callahan: He lost his balls... he got killed.
[the whole
bar starts laughing]
-Captain
Briggs: Think things over, Callahan. Get with it. It's a whole new ball game
these days.
-Harry
Callahan: Funny. I never thought of it as a game.
-Coffee Shop
Waitress: Hey, mister. Is that your dog?
-Harry
Callahan: Why? Do you want him?
-Harry
Callahan: Swell!
-Harry
Callahan: Looks like I owe you one, meat head.
-Harry
Callahan: [Turning around, pointing his gun at Horace's nose] Good morning,
Horace.
-Horace
King: Sweet Sister Sadie, where the hell did you get that?
-Harry
Callahan: I've had it a while. I just thought I'd get used to it.
-Horace
King: I heard about the car. Fabulous, coming after you in tanks.
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah, ther're making those these days. For sheiks and business
executives, hoods. Impregnable to about anything but artillery.
-Horace
King: Well, you got that covered.
[Horace
King Fires two shotgun blasts a the target]
-Harry
Callahan: Not bad.
-Horace
King: Not bad, my ass! You've got to strain the remains for the fingerprints.
-Harry
Callahan: Well, this is the .44 Magnum Auto-Mag and it hold a 300-grain
cartridge. And, if properly used, it can remove the fingerprints.
-Mick:
[screaming] Get her! Get the BITCH!
-Mick:
[while beating up Callahan with his men] Hot shot cop! Your ass is *mine*!
-Mick:
[holding Jennifer's handgun] Oh, is this what you had in mind for me?
[cackles
evilly]
-Jennifer
Spencer: [to Mick] All right, you prickless scum! You think you can get it up
this time? You think you can make it work this time! You want me, you filthy
maggot, you TAKE ME!. 'Cause this time you'll have to rape my *dead body*!
-Ray Parkins:
I'm gonna call Mick.
-Tyrone: You
do as you want, and keep that psycho bastard away from me.
-Ray
Parkins: [as she is leaving] I'll tell him you said that.
[Bennett
finds Jennifer's gun on Mick]
-Harry
Callahan: Run it through Ballistics. I think you'll find that *his* gun there,
was used in *all* the killings.
-Officer
Bennett: So it's over?
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah, it's over.
-Jennifer
Spencer: So what now?
-Harry
Callahan: Now, I guess I'll have to...
-Jennifer
Spencer: [cutting him off] read me my rights? And where was all this concern
for my rights when I was being beaten and mauled? And where were my sister's
rights when she was being *brutalized*? There is a thing called justice
Callahan, and is it justice that they should all just walk away?
-Ray
Parkins: [as Jennifer has her at gunpoint] So, the bitch is here. Tell me,
how's your *slut* sister?
[Jennifer
then shoots her]
-Mick:
[pressuring Alby to rape Jennifer] Stick it Alby! Are you queer?
-Eddie: [Harry
Callahan appears with a gun] Holy shit!
-Eddie: Hey,
can't you see our sister's in mourning? Why don't you get the hell out of here?
-Harry
Callahan: [to Eddie and Carl] Why don't you boys suck some fish heads, huh?
[punches
Carl and is about to punch Eddie]
-Mrs.
Kruger: [with a gun] Don't even think about it!
-Harry
Callahan: I'll come back, when you're less bereaved.
-Chief
Lester Jannings: He couldn't live with it. The other vermin didn't care. But
him, the guilt ate at his gut like an acid. He wanted you to come back. He
would pray every night that you'd come back. Until one night he couldn't wait
any longer. Took his car out and smashed it and his brains into a retaining
wall. Now you're here, and he doesn't even know it. My fault. I should have let
him be punished then, along with the other filth. But he was my only son. his
mother died giving birth to him. He and I are all each other have. I was afraid
for him. Afraid for me. See, I was a public figure. So I did things. I fixed
it. And now I just want you to go. Let it end.
-Jennifer
Spencer: There's one left.
-Chief
Lester Jannings: Yes. And I've got him, in my jail. He preyed on Alby and
preyed on me ever since. And that too is going to end.
-Mick:
[surprising them] Oh is that so, Lester boy?
-Jennifer
Spencer: I saw the commotion the other day; you're either a cop or public enemy
number one.
-Harry
Callahan: Heh. Some people might say both.
-Jennifer
Spencer: Really, who?
-Harry
Callahan: Oh, bozos with big brass nameplates on their desk and asses the shape
of the seat of their chairs.
-Jennifer
Spencer: Why?
-Harry
Callahan: Ah, it's a question of methods. Everybody wants results but nobody
wants to do what they have to do to get them done.
-Mick: I
don't give a fuck about Tyrone. And Alby, he's covered.
-Ray
Parkins: Alby? How? The guy's a vegetable, he doesn't even know if he's pissing
himself!
-Mick: He's
*covered*.
-Ray
Parkins: [teasingly] Ok.
-Lt.
Donnelly: Helluva way to spend the night off Harry!
-Harry
Callahan: You joining the act, too?
-Lt.
Donnelly: No for chrissakes! Back off a little! I'm worried about your ass.
You're either gonna get it shot off or kicked outta here!
-Harry
Callahan: So what else is new?
-Harry
Callahan: [to Sao Paulo suspect he's chased down with the Retirement Home bus]
I suppose I ought to [sarcastically]
-Harry
Callahan: read you your rights?
-Burly
Detective: What do ya think, a gang hit, screwed-up drug score, unlucky John,
or an unhappy love affair? Huh? Don't tell me this shit's gettin' to ya. Not
Harry Callahan. Say it ain't so.
-Harry
Callahan: No, this stuff isn't gettin' to me. The knifings, the beatings, old
ladies being bashed in the head for their Social Security checks, teachers
being thrown out of a fourth-floor window because they don't give As, that
doesn't bother me a bit.
-Burly
Detective: Come on, Harry. Take it easy.
-Harry
Callahan: Or this job, either. Having to wade through the scum of this city,
being swept away by bigger and bigger waves of corruption, apathy and red tape.
Nah, that doesn't bother me. But you know what does bother me?
Burly
Detective: What?
-Harry
Callahan: You know what makes me really sick to my stomach?
-Burly
Detective: What?
-Harry
Callahan: Is watching you stuff your face with those hot dogs. Nobody, I mean
NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog.
-Jennifer
Spencer: Need a lift?
-Young Guy:
Why, yes ma'am.
-Jennifer
Spencer: Good. Then shove a jack up your ass!
[drives
off]
-Young Guy:
Puta!
[Harry, Lt.
Donnelly & Capt. Briggs are meeting in the Commissioner's office, after
Harry's confrontation with Threlkis the gangster]
-Captain
Briggs: [shouting] In more than 30 years of police work, this is the single,
most OUTRAGEOUS transgression of authority I ever heard about. What the HELL
did you think you were doing?
-Harry
Callahan: My job.
-Captain
Briggs: Is it your job, to harass & incite an old man into a heart attack?
-Harry
Callahan: My job is to investigate homicide. That old man happens to be one of
the biggest crime lords on the west coast. How the hell was I supposed to know
he was gonna vapor-lock?
-Captain
Briggs: But you hoped he would?
-Harry Callahan:
The Doker case is mine. It was at a standstill. I was just trying to break it
loose.
-Captain
Briggs: Sure, with threats and intimidation!
-Harry
Callahan: Any way possible!
-Captain
Briggs: Are you aware that you have destroyed MONTHS - of intelligence &
surveillance work? We're talking thousands of dollar, hundreds of man-hours?
Special investigations has been BUSTING ITS ASS preparing a case against
Threlkis.
-Harry
Callahan: He would have just snaked his way out of it. Maybe we saved the
taxpayers a little money.
-Captain
Briggs: [with contempt] I ought to bust your ass down to traffic. Or better
yet, kick it off the force! You're a dinosaur, Callahan. Your ideas don't fit
today.
-Harry
Callahan: Just what ideas are these? That murder's a crime? That it shouldn't
be punished?
-Captain
Briggs: [sneering] Hey, don't you lecture me, you son-of-a-bitch. You know who
you're talking to, huh? You know MY record?
-Harry
Callahan: [disgusted] Yeah. You're a legend in your own mind!
-Captain
Briggs: [angrily] Goddamn you, Callahan!
-Police
Commissioner: Gentlemen, that's enough! Inspector, your methods are
unconventional to say the least. Well, you get results. But often your
successes are more costly to this department in terms of publicity &
physical destruction than most other men's failures!
-Lt.
Donnelly: Commissioner, now I...
-Police
Commissioner: [cuts Donnelly off] Please, Lieutenant! The press will have a
field day with this latest escapade. There may be further civil & legal repercussions.
As a matter of fact there may even be attempts at retaliation. I think it would
be wise if the inspector took some time off.
[Briggs
nods approvingly]
-Ray
Parkins: Why don't you suck my ass with a straw!

Smith &
Wesson Model 29
Inspector
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (Clint Eastwood) carries his Smith &
Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum as his sidearm in the film. He is first seen pulling
it in the coffee shop and saying what is one of the most famous movie lines in
history. The S&W is used until it is kicked into a curb drain by Mick (Paul
Drake). He then uses his AMC Auto Mag Pistol in .44 AMP as a replacement.

AMP Auto
Mag Model 180
After being
attacked by the group of assassins in the mob, Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood)
is inspired to take out his old pistol, an AMP Auto Mag Model 180 chambered in
.44 AMP. When his Smith & Wesson Model 29 is kicked off of a dock by Mick
(Paul Drake), he replaces it with his Auto Mag for the remainder of the film.
The production crew had a very difficult time aquiring this gun to the point
where they had to contact the original designer, who had enough parts in his
basement to build two guns for the film. The first was left in live firing mode
so Clint Eastwood could shoot it and accurately depict recoil while the second
was converted to fire blanks for the film. The gun's serial numbers were
"Clint1" and "Clint2".

Callahan
takes his AMP Auto Mag Model 180 out of its case. Note how the magazines are
loaded with six rounds instead of the full eight. This may be because he doesn't
want to wear out the springs on the magazines, so he doesn't store them fully
loaded. It could also be a reference to the famous 'Six shots or only five'
line in the first movie.

Never sneak
up on a man with a loaded gun, especially if he's Clint Eastwood.
"Well,
this is the .44 Magnum Auto Mag and it holds a 300 grain cartridge. And if
properly used, it can remove the fingerprints." It's not entirely clear
what 'proper' technique could result in a suspect losing all of his fingers and
both his thumbs, particularly considering the weapon only holds a maximum of
8+1 rounds, but no doubt Clint would find a way...
Not to harp
on Eastwood, but he gets a pretty good group for someone not using the sights.

temper several times and threw it after it jammed, requiring several more
takes.

Browning
Hi-Power
Two of the
mob assassins attempting to kill Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) use Browning
Hi-Power pistols. Further on in the film, another mob assassin tries to kill
Callahan in his apartment in San Paulo, also with a Browning Hi-Power (This one
fitted with a suppressor), but trips on Callahan's dog Meathead, giving him
time to draw his Smith & Wesson Model 29 and kill him. Later, Mick (Paul
Drake) tries to grab his own Hi-Power to shoot Callahan when he walks into his
house unannounced.

M1911A1
An M1911A1
is used by the bank robber that Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) chases when he
arrives in San Paulo. Another M1911A1 is later seen in the hands of George
(Michael Maurer), one of Mick's (Paul Drake) men.
Trivia: The

and Salim Abu Azziz (Art Malik) heavily resembles the chase scene in this film
and may have been inspired by it.

her waist "Mexican carry" style to Tyrone (Wendall Wellman) in his

variants had a butt-mounted magazine release and the Beretta 92F didn't exist
yet, leaving only the 92SB.

Background
Picking up
three years after the events in Magnum Force, a threatening terrorist group
called, The People's Revolutionary Strike Force declare war to the city of San
Francisco and demand a ransom to be paid, otherwise they plan to blow the city
apart. While Inspector 'Dirty' Harry Callahan is at a limbo following his
unorthodox method during a robbery, he's at it to dispatch the terrorist group,
by playing their game by being more dirty than ever. But this time, he's got a
new partner, which might prove the task to be somewhat more difficult than
ever, unless the two can work together.

-Harry Callahan:
She wants to play lumberjack, she's going to have to learn to handle her end of
the log.
[Callaghan
learns he is being transferred to Personnel]
-Harry
Callahan: Personnel? That's for assholes!
-Capt McKay:
I was in Personnel for ten years.
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah.
-Kate Moore:
You laugh at me, you bastard, and I'll shoot you where you stand.
-Harry
Callahan: Here's a seven-point suppository, Captain.
-Capt McKay:
What did you say?
-Harry
Callahan: I said stick it in your ass.
-Harry
Callahan: May I make a statement, McKay?
-Capt McKay:
Go ahead!
-Harry
Callahan: Your mouthwash ain't makin' it.
-Mustapha:
You really *are* a dirty bastard, ain't you, Harry?
-Harry
Callahan: The dirtiest.
[to black
militant groupies]
-Harry
Callahan: That's mighty white of you.
-Frank
DiGiorgio: [DiGiorgio is dying] Harry, listen, the punk who cut me. I've seen
him before.
-Harry
Callahan: Where?
-Frank
DiGiorgio: ...I just can't make the name.
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Well, where do you know him from, Frank?
-Frank
DiGiorgio: That homicide, remember, Harry? The old hooker, Filmore district.
The summer of '71?
-Harry
Callahan: Yeah, well, what about it?
-Frank
DiGiorgio: He was one of the pimps we questioned. We liked him for it, Harry,
we liked him real good.
-Harry
Callahan: As I recall, we liked everybody north of Market Street on that one.
-Frank
DiGiorgio: He had one of those cutesy-pie, little boy names: Charlie, or
something... or Bobby...
-Lt. Al
Bressler: I'll check Records, they should have your notes.
[Bressler
leaves]
-Frank
DiGiorgio: Ten-to-one they blow it.
-Harry
Callahan: Not this time, Frank.
-Harry
Callahan: Where is he?
-Mustapha:
He went white. Why, did he do something else foolish?
-Harry
Callahan: For $75, you get to make it with a rubber dolly.
-Frank
DiGiorgio: Hey, what's with the citizen?
[Harry
turns the car around and approaches a restaurant, with a worried-looking waiter
outside. Harry addresses the waiter as he pulls up]
-Harry
Callahan: Police officer, what's the problem?
-Waiter #1:
Oh, thank God. He's inside.
[he turns
to go back into the restaurant]
Waiter #1:
[Harry looks at him puzzedly, doesn't move]
Waiter #1:
[noticing Harry isn't following him] Come on, it's a heart attack!
-Harry
Callahan: [to Digorgio] Wait here.
-Waiter #1:
Make some room, please. Please move aside. Please, move aside, this is an
emergency.
[Harry and
the waiter continue into the restaurant]
-Waiter #1:
Excuse us, please. Would you please move over.
Would you please give us room.
[to the
owner]
-Waiter #1:
He's a police officer.
-Restaurant
Owner: Police? But where's the ambulance?
-Waiter #2:
[to Harry] This poor man's had a heart attack. I think he's still breathing,
though.
-Harry
Callahan: [gazes down at the man on the floor, then begins kicking him in the
ribs] Come on, get up. Get up! Get up. Come on.
-Waiter #2:
What are you doing?
-Harry
Callahan: [continuing] Come on, get up, get up, get up! Come on!
[Harry
grabs him by the tie and yanks him to his feet]
-Restaurant
Customer: [shocked] I say!
-Harry
Callahan: [pulling the man out of the restaurant by his tie] Party's over.
-Freddie the
Fainter: Thanks a lot, Harry.
-Harry
Callahan: What are you squawking about? You got the free meal, didn't you?
-Freddie the
Fainter: Yeah, but I always enjoy that ride in the ambulance.
-Harry
Callahan: Get out of here.
[shoves him
away]
-Capt McKay:
$14,379.
-Harry
Callahan: How can that be?
-Capt McKay:
You want an itemized account? You took out two front doors, one front window,
12 feet of counter, plus damages to the stock, plus one city vehicle totaled,
not to mention three hostages in the hospital, all of whom will probably sue
the city.
-Harry
Callahan: For what?
-Capt McKay:
Excessive use of force. For your information, Callahan, the minority community
has just about had it with this kind of police work.
-Harry
Callahan: By the "minority community", I suppose you're talking about
the hoods.
-Harry
Callahan: [heading into the Coroner's office] Tell me, ever been to one of
these before?
-Kate Moore:
No.
-Harry
Callahan: In that case, I'd like to suggest that you sit out here.
-Kate Moore:
Please don't concern yourself, Inspector.
-Kate Moore:
[queasy and sweaty as autopsy surgeon is examining subject's brain]
-Autopsy
Surgeon: Subject brain shows no contrecoup-type damage or blood clotting.
[peering
closer]
-Autopsy
Surgeon: Oh, Jesus H. Christ, Harry, come here and look at this! It's the
damnedest thing I ever saw.
-Harry
Callahan: What's that?
-Autopsy
Surgeon: What it says: "Eat at Luigi's!"
[he starts
laughing. Harry just rolls his eyes. Autopsy surgeon continues laughing, and
his assistant joins in on the laughter]
-Kate Moore:
[gulps and rushes out of room]
-Autopsy
Surgeon: [checkiing the brain] Son of a bitch, Harry... look at this!
-Harry
Callahan: What?
-Autopsy
Surgeon: It's the damndest thing I ever saw... what it says right here... 'eat

-Harry
Callahan: [tackles Henry Lee in a church while knocking over some pews] All
right, speedy, you're under arrest!
-Father
John: In the name of God, man, this is a church. What are you doing?
-Harry
Callahan: I'm a police officer, this man's under arrest.
-Henry Lee:
Father, help me, I wasn't doing a damn thing. This guy is just rousting me.
-Father
John: Would it be asking too much to see some credentials, Officer?
-Harry
Callahan: This guy runs like a rabbit. I'm not about to let him go.
-Father
John: I'd like to see the credentials, right now.
Harry
Callahan: If you insist.
[slugs
suspect out cold and then gets his credentials out]
-Harry
Callahan: Callahan, Inspector.
-Father
John: Well, Callahan... I think you're a disgrace to this city!
-Kate Moore:
[bursts into the church, gun drawn] Okay, nobody move!
-Harry
Callahan: Marvelous.
-Mustapha:
[inviting Harry to come in and talk] Why don't you just come into my office
here.
[Inspector
Moore starts following Harry in]
-Mustapha:
Uh, just you.
-Black Guys:
Don't worry, pig, we'll see she don't get lonesome.
-Harry
Callahan: Well, that's mighty white of you.
Black Guys:
[start to move closer to Kate Moore with mischief looks]
-Kate Moore:
Now gentlemen, before anybody does anything uncalled for, I'd like to take this
opportunity to point out to you that I am a police officer, and if you touch me
with intent to do bodily harm...
[fades out
as Harry continues inside]
-Kate Moore:
[... moments later when Harry exits shop, the confrontation is still going on]
-Harry Callahan:
Having fun, Inspector? If you're through socializing, we do have work to do.
[leaves the
shop]
-Kate Moore:
[to herself] Son of a bitch.
[She
catches up to Harry]
-Kate Moore:
Look, Inspector, if you have some sort of objection to the way I handled
myself, I wish you'd just say so... I thought I was doing all right.
-Harry
Callahan: [aside to the camera, after getting in]
Marvelous.
-Harry
Callahan: [speaking to the mayor & Capt. McKay] If you're talking about the
Mustapha bust, nobody smashed anything. In fact, I made a deal with Mustapha -
he was gonna help me find out who the people were!
-The Mayor:
[stunned] What's he talking about?
-Harry
Callahan: Doesn't it bother anyone that no weapons were found?
-Capt McKay:
We'll find them!
-Harry
Callahan: [to McKay] Meanwhile, the people are still out there and they're
going to blow the HELL out of half this city. And meanwhile, you're telling
everybody how great we are!
-Capt McKay:
All right, Callahan, button your lip, that's an order!
-Harry
Callahan: Captain, if you want to jerk all these people off, you can, but don't
do it with me.
-Capt McKay:
That's it, Callahan! You just got yourself a 60-day suspension!
-Harry
Callahan: [angrily] Make it 90!
-Capt McKay:
180! Give me your star.
[Harry
pulls out his badge and angrily hands it to Capt. McKay]
-Harry
Callahan: [angrily] Here's a 7-point suppository, Captain!
-Capt McKay:
[stunned] WHAT did you say?
-Harry
Callahan: [angrily] I said STICK IT IN YOUR ASS!
[Harry
walks down the steps toward the mob of reporters, but does not stop. Kate Moore
soon follows him out]
-Harry
Callahan: [in bar late one night is playing billiards when Bressler and McKay
enter]
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Harry?
-Harry
Callahan: What can I do for you?
-Harry
Callahan: We've got to talk.
-Harry
Callahan: Go right ahead.
-Capt McKay:
I want all the information that you have on this case, Callahan.
-Harry
Callahan: You've got it - black militants, remember?
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Come on, Harry, so we were wrong.
-Harry
Callahan: [has Buchinski's head over toilet] Wanda, where is she?
-Buchinski:
Go to hell.
-Harry
Callahan: [takes nearby plunger and presses it on man's face] One more time.
Wanda.
-Buchinski:
All right, all right. She quit a couple of weeks ago, that's all I know.
[Harry
presses harder with the plunger]
-Buchinski:
She got religion!
-Harry
Callahan: What do you mean?
-Buchinski:
She been hangin' around that little church down on Garvey.
-Harry
Callahan: [jams plunger down, off camera. The toilet flushes. Harry departs]
-The Mayor:
Who the hell are you? What do you want?
Bobby
Maxwell: You.
-The Mayor:
Get away from me, you son of a bitch. I'm not going anywhere with you.
-Bobby
Maxwell: The hell you aren't!
[shoots
mayor in chest with taser gun]
-Lalo:
[crying after Miki is accidentally shot; due to Maxwell stabbing DiGiorgio]
Miki. Miki! Oh, baby, it's all right, I'll get you out. I'll get you home.
Bobby, hey, Bobby, help me. Help me get her up.
-Bobby
Maxwell: [trying to pull him away] Come on, man, you're just going to screw
around and get us caught!
-Lalo: No,
she's all right, we're gonna make it!
-Bobby
Maxwell: Forget it, she's dead.
-Lalo: She's
not dead!
-Bobby
Maxwell: The hell she isn't!
[pumps
three more bullets into her with DiGiorgio's gun]
-Bobby
Maxwell: Come on, it's over.
-Lalo:
[shocked] Bobby!
-Lt. Dobbs:
Are you finished with the questioning, Callahan?
-Harry
Callahan: Hypothetical situation, huh? All right, I'm standing on the street
corner, and Mrs. Grey there comes up and propositions me. She says if I come
home with her, for $5 she'll put on an exhibition with a Shetland pony...
-Mrs. Grey:
If this is your idea of humor, Inspector...
-Lt. Dobbs:
All right, what are you trying to do here, Callahan?
-Harry
Callahan: I'm just trying to find out if anybody in this room knows what the
hell law is being broken, besides cruelty to animals.
-Harry
Callahan: I'll tell you what you are to me, little man. You're just a maggot
who sells dirty pictures.
-Lt. Al
Bressler: [on phone as Harry enters] Hey Harry, I'm just talking to...
[Harry
drops a defused bomb on Al's desk]
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Jesus Christ!
-Harry
Callahan: Give him my best...
-Liquor
Store Lead Punk: [to Harry, while booting him out the door] Run, you jive-ass
bastard!
-Harry
Callahan: What about that punk?
-Lt. Al
Bressler: You mean the suspect?
-Harry
Callahan: Suspect my ass!
-Wanda:
[after going over the evil plan] Alright now remember! This is for the people!
-Lalo: [with
disgust] Spare me.
-Mustapha:
Callahan, you're on the wrong side.
-Harry
Callahan: How do you figure that?
-Mustapha:
You go out and put your ass on the line for a bunch of dudes who'd no sooner
let you in the front door than they would me.
-Harry
Callahan: I'm not doin' it for them.
-Mustapha:
Who then?
-Harry
Callahan: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
-Capt McKay:
I said I wanted the hoods run out of town but I never said to use violence!
-Harry
Callahan: What did you want me to do, yell trick-or-treat at 'em?
-Lt. Al
Bressler: [Harrys playing pool when Bressler and KcKay approach him about the
case] No. We play as a team.
-Harry
Callahan: As I remember, the last time we played as a team I got the cue stuck
in my ass.
-Harry
Callahan: A 357 magnum is a good weapon, but I've seen 38's bounce off of
windshieds. No good in a city like this.
-Massage
Girl: Hi, there.
-Harry
Callahan: You're not Wanda.
-Massage
Girl: Well, these are the breaks. Needs air. Can't hump a limp dummy, I always
say.
[picks up
rubber dolly and starts blowing air into it]
-Massage
Girl: Uh, speaking of limp dummies, don't you think you better strip?
-Harry
Callahan: Where's Wanda?
-Massage
Girl: Beats the hell out of me, Tom.
[continues
blow air in dolly. Harry picks up her cigarette and burns a hole in the dolly]
-Harry
Callahan: [grabs lady's throat. Air hisses out of the dolly] Now, I'm going to
ask you just one last time, where's Wanda?
-Massage
Girl: I don't know, man, I don't know. She left here a couple of weeks ago. Ask
Buchinski, he runs the whole damn street.
-Harry
Callahan: Where do I find this Buchinski?
-Massage
Girl: Down the hall, to the right.
-Harry
Callahan: Maxwell!
[Maxwell
fires at Callahan]
-Harry
Callahan: You fuckin' fruit.
[Callahan
fires an M72 LAW rocket launcher, obliterating Maxwell]
-Harry
Callahan: Is that a confessional over there?
[Harry
points to the corner of the church]
-Father
John: [smugly] You wanna make a confession?
-Harry
Callahan: You first!
[Harry
grabs Father John & shoves him roughly into the confessional]
-Harry
Callahan: I want Maxwell!
[pulls his
gun out]
[Wanda
walks into the Third Street Drawbridge operator's office]
-Wanda: Hi
there.
-Bridge
Operator: Hello, young lady. What can I do for you?
Wanda:
[smiles] Raise the bridge.
-Bridge
Operator: [incredulously] Raise the bridge?
[pause]
-Bridge
Operator: Are you kidding?
[Wanda
draws her gun]
-Wanda: When
I tell you to.
[cuts to
Maxwell's van following the Mayor's car along Third Street towards the bridge]
-The Mayor:
Wish we could've stayed. Think the Giants are finally gonna win one.
-Mayor's
Aide: I don't know, Mr. Mayor. Looks like it's gonna end up as a no-hitter.
[checks his
watch]
-Mayor's
Aide: Besides, you do have the testimonial this evening.
-The Mayor:
Oh, god, testimonials. They never end, do they?
[cuts to
Maxwell's van]
-Bobby
Maxwell: Lalo, hand me the taser gun.
-Lalo: Karl?
[Karl pulls
a taser gun out of its box]
-Karl: Man,
this looks like something from a James Bond movie. You sure it will work?
-Lalo: Karl,
there's 25,000 volts in this thing. Even the fat boys are gonna do what we want
once we hook it up to them.
[hands his
taser gun to Maxwell; meanwhile, Wanda - still holding the bridge operator at
gunpoint, sees the Mayor's car and Maxwell's van approaching]
-Bobby
Maxwell: Okay, Tex.
[Tex moves
the van into the left lane, speeds up, and passes the Mayor's car; Wanda
observes them]
-Wanda:
Raise it.
[the
operator presses a button; the warning bells go off and the gates begin to
lower. Maxwell's van stops at the street corner adjacent to the operator's
office. As soon as the gates have lowered, the operator moves a lever, and the
bridge begins to rise; the Mayor's car stops at the intersection. Maxwell and
his men get out]
-The Mayor:
[spots them] Wait a minute. What the hell? Okay, get me out of this!
[the driver
immediately floors it and turns right onto the side street; and Maxwell's men
open fire, blowing out the tires]
-Lalo: [shoves
Tex's gun aside] Save the mayor, goddamnit!
[the
mayor's car stops within a few feet of a semi-truck blocking the road. Maxwell
fires off a LAWS rocket that hits the truck's engine, causing it to explode.
The mayor's driver gets out, only to get gunned down by a hail of bullets. The
PRSF members then open the passenger's doors and shoot the mayor's aide in the
head]
-The Mayor:
Who the hell are you? What do you want?
-Bobby
Maxwell: You.
-The Mayor:
Get away from me, you son of a bitch. I'm not going anywhere with you.
-Bobby
Maxwell: The hell you aren't!
[shoots him
in the chest with the taser gun; Maxwell, Lalo, Tex, and Karl take the mayor by
his arms, and lead him across an industrial lot to a waiting motorboat. As the
boat speeds off into the bay, Wanda sticks a star on the bridge operator's dead
body]
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: Why should I help you?
- Harry
Callahan: Because if you don't, I've talked to Robbery.
They might be interested
in these elaborate furnishings you have.
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: What are you talking about?
-Harry
Callahan: [picks up animal figurine] Room 401, Fairmount.
[picks up
another figurine]
-Harry
Callahan: Rest easy at the Holiday Inn.
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: [studying a list of suspects] Bobby Maxwell. He's the main man.
-Harry
Callahan: You know him?
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: Stone waste of white.
-Kate Moore:
[arriving at Mustapha's barber shop headquarters] OK, I give up... what's this?
-Harry
Callahan: This is the Fillmore chapter of the VFW... Very Few Whites.
-Harry
Callahan: I'm looking for Ed Mustapha.
-Abdul: You
holding some kinda warrant, honky?
-Harry
Callahan: What I'm holding is Henry Lee Caldwell.
-Abdul:
[beat] Hey, well, I never heard of him. Now let's see how fast you and the lady
fuzz can get your little white asses out of here!
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: Why don't you just come into my office.
[indicating
Callahan]
-'Big Ed'
Mustapha: Uh, just you.
-Abdul:
[approaching Moore] Don't worry, pig. We'll make sure she don't get lonesome.
-Harry
Callahan: [turning to Abdul] Well, that's mighty white of you.
-Abdul:
[Callahan and Moore enter "Big Ed" Mustapha's barber shop
headquarters] Well, well. If it ain't the Mighty Whitey and friend.
-Harry
Callahan: I'm looking for "Big Ed" Mustapha.
-Koblo:
Sorry, honky. She can stay, but, uh, you got to go!
-Abdul:
Yeah, baby, we trying to keep up the standards. You understand.
-Harry
Callahan: You're not making us feel too welcome.
-Koblo: Oh,
you welcome! 'Bout as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool!
[Crowd
laughs until Callahan and Moore display their badges]
-Abdul: [slowly
and sarcastically] Well, lookee here. If it ain't the fuzz.

Smith &
Wesson Model 29
Inspector
Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) continues to carry as his sidearm his ".44
Magnum", the Smith & Wesson Model 29 with an 6 1/2" barrel. He
comments in the film to his partner Insp. Kate Moore (Tyne Daly) that he
particularly favors this gun due to penetration power, since he claims he's
seen a .38 ricochet off a car windshield.

M72A1 LAW
M72A1 LAW
(Light Anti-Tank Weapon) rocket launcher is first seen in the film being
demonstrated at an Army testing range. The US Army instructor refers to the
launcher as a "L.A.W.S.", which is the alternate acronym used for
this weapon, standing for Light Anti-Armor Weapons System. The LAW is also
among the weapons taken from the depot by Maxwell (DeVernen Bookwalter) and his
men. During the final battle on Alcatraz, Maxwell drops his LAW and it is
picked up by Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood), who uses it to destroy the tower
that Maxwell makes his last stand in.

Background
Magnum
Force is the 1973 sequel to Dirty Harry in which Clint Eastwood as San
Francisco Police Inspector Harry Callahan investigates a series of killings by
vigilante police officers.
Directed by
Ted Post. Written by John Milius and Michael Cimino.
Harry
Callahan
-A man's
got to know his limitations.
-Nothing
wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot.
-I asked if
you knew where San Quentin is, and you do, don't you asshole?"
-Couldn't
have happened to a nicer bunch of guys.
-This is a 44. Magnum, the most powerful handgun
in the world. It can take your head clean off. You've got to ask yourself one
question, Do I feel lucky?
Others
-Prostitute:
[to cabdriver] Too bad you're not on welfare, I'd give you a freebie.
Dialogue
-Sunny: Hi!
-Harry
Callahan: Oh, hi... what's your name?
-Sunny:
Sunny. You know, I've been living here for almost six months now. It's funny
I've never met you before.
-Harry
Callahan: Oh well... I work a lot.
-Sunny: I
know. You're the cop who lives upstairs.
-Harry
Callahan: That's right.
-Sunny: Mind
if I ask you a question?
-Harry
Callahan: Go ahead.
-Sunny: What
does a girl have to do to go to bed with you?
-Harry
Callahan: Try knocking on the door.
[Harry and
Early converse about Davis, Sweet, Grimes, and Astrachan - the motorcycle cops
- after encountering them outside the police station following the Cost Plus
robbery]
-Harry
Callahan: You know those guys?
-Early
Smith: They came through the Academy after me. They stick together like
flypaper, you know? Everybody thought they were queer for each other.
-Harry
Callahan: Tell you something. If the rest of you could shoot like them, I
wouldn't care if the whole damn department was queer.
-Harry
Callahan: [confronted by Davis, Astrachan, and Grimes, the three vigilante
cops] You heroes killed a dozen people this week. What are you going to do next
week?
-Officer
John Davis: Kill a dozen more.
-Lieutenant
Briggs: Suppose they panic and start shooting?
-Harry
Callahan: Nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people get shot!
-Lieutenant
Briggs: You're on loan to Stakeout, Callahan.
-Harry
Callahan: That's right, Lieutenant! You saw to that.
-Harry
Callahan: Well, I just work for the city, Briggs!
-Lieutenant
Briggs: So do I, longer than you, and I never had to take my gun out of its
holster once. I'm proud of that.
-Harry
Callahan: Well, you're a good man, lieutenant. A good man always knows his
limitations...
[to stop an
aircraft hijacking, Harry disguises himself as a pilot and begins taxiing for
takeoff]
-Pilot:
Excuse me, Captain. This may seem silly but can you fly?
-Harry
Callahan: Nope. Never had a lesson.
[This
shocks the hijacker holding a gun to Harry's back long enough for Harry to
subdue him]
-Officer
Phillip Sweet: What kind of a load do you use in that .44?
-Harry
Callahan: It's a light Special. This size gun it gives you better control and
less recoil than a .357 Magnum with wadcutters.
-Infirmary
Doctor: [stitching up Harry's head] Sure you don't want a local for this,
Harry? Takes about seven stitches.
-Harry Callahan:
No, thanks.
-Infirmary
Doctor: Ok, it's your ass...
-Harry
Callahan: My head, the cut's on my head.
-Infirmary
Doctor: Why does everybody suddenly become a comedian in here?
[Davis
stops Ricca's limo]
-Officer
John Davis: [taps on the window; Gino rolls it down]
Could I see your driver's
license, please?
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: [chewing on a piece of gum] Do you know who that is, sitting
back there?
-Officer
John Davis: I'll still have to see your driver's license, please.
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: I'll have to find it.
-Officer
John Davis: You know why you're being stopped? [Ricca's attorney in the
backseat rolls down his window]
-Nat
Weinstein: Yes, we know, officer, and you're making a big mistake.
-Officer John
Davis: You crossed the double-line back there.
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: Double-line? [The attorney pats Gino on the shoulder]
-Nat
Weinstein: Just take it easy. [to Davis] Whatever you say, officer. [Gino can't
find the license]
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: Just can't happen to find it, sir. [Davis walks back to his
motorcycle] That's right, simple assignment. Check, see if it's stolen.
-Carmine
Ricca: I want this bastard busted out of his job.
-Nat
Weinstein: We'll take care of this guy, you fellas. Just take it easy, huh?
[Davis finishes writing something on his notepad, then walks back up to the
car]
-Officer
John Davis: This car registered to you?
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: [points to Ricca] To him.
-Officer
John Davis: I'll have to see the registration.
-Gino,
Ricca's Driver: Come on, give me that license. [Davis promptly takes his Colt
Python revolver out of its holster, and empties six rounds into the car at
point-blank range, killing all four occupants inside. As the bodies fall limp,
Davis reholsters his gun, walks back to his motorcycle, and rides off.]
[The day
after the murderous pimp kills one of his girls, he is driving across the
Golden Gate Bridge. Davis comes up behind his car, and trails him. Davis
follows the pimp as he takes the exit for Alexander Avenue, and then turns left
to head under the highway. He eventually ends up on the service road below the
Vista Overlook, and stops under the bridge's north approach. Davis dismounts
and starts walking towards the car. The pimp quickly hides his Colt Detective
Special pistol in his lap]
-Officer
John Davis: Good day, sir. Is this car registered to you?
-J.J.
Wilson: Oh yes, sir, this is my car. You must be new. Do you know who I am?
-Officer
John Davis: I'll still have to see your license and your registration, sir. I believe
you were speeding coming across the bridge. [The pimp chuckles, and pulls out
his wallet, which has several wads of money in it, an obvious bribe. Davis
brings up his Colt Python and shoots the pimp in the neck. As the pimp falls
over into the passenger's side of the seat, Davis fires four more rounds into
the man's chest. He reholsters his weapon, walks back to his motorcycle, and
speeds back up towards the road as the pimp's body goes limp]
[Harry is
at the morgue with Briggs and Avery, examining the bodies of the vigilante
cops' victims]
-Lieutenant
Neil Briggs: You and your partner are back on Homicide.
-Harry
Callahan: This is a little dramatic, is it, Briggs? Not your usual style.
-Lieutenant
Neil Briggs: It's meant to be, Callahan.
-Captain
Avery: Look, this thing might be bigger than even we think it is. [They walk
past the bodies of the vigilante cop's victims, with Avery calling out each
one's crimes as they go along] Hijacking and gambling. [He lifts the tag of the
second corpse] Trucking. [lifts tag on the third corpse] Narcotics and
prostitution. This is the cream in the bottle, Callahan: someone's trying to
put the courts out of business.
-Harry
Callahan: So far you've said nothing wrong. [They reach the last two bodies]
-Captain
Avery: This one just came in about an hour ago. Somebody wants it all. [points
to the left body] This guy was just a pimp. [points to the body next to it]
That's one of his girls.
-Harry
Callahan: How did she get it?
-Captain
Avery: Uh, sometime before he got hit, he poured a can of drain cleaner down
her throat.
-Harry
Callahan: That shows a certain sense of style.
-Lieutenant
Neil Briggs: They're all hard, Callahan.
-Harry
Callahan: Look, am I gonna have to have him leaning over my shoulder?
-Captain
Avery: Look, you work with Briggs on this, Callahan. But if you ever lean out
of line, so help me lord, I'll flop you low in whale shit.
-Harry
Callahan: Speaking of whale shit, what have you turned up, Briggs?
-Lieutenant
Neil Briggs: Nobody in my department is sitting on their ass.
-Captain
Avery: [takes out his badge] See this thing, Callahan? The chief; he calls me
on this all the time. Even in the can. I've been out of my shoes for 48 hours,
and still we have no witnesses; not one. In these cases, there's always an
officer right on top of the crime, but nobody's ever seen a thing.
Harry
Callahan: Who was the officer on this one?
-Captain
Avery: A patrolman, uh, Sweet, wasn't it, Briggs?
-Harry
Callahan: Sweet seems like a good man. Well I'll get on that ballistic report
first thing in the morning.
-Lieutenant
Neil Briggs: We ran all the slugs through ballistics. We're never gonna see
those guns; it was too professional. You're wasting your time.
-Harry
Callahan: Well it takes me time, Briggs. [walks towards the door] A man has to
know his limitations. [leaves the morgue]
[Harry,
Early, and one of the CSI technicians are examining the pimp's car in the crime
garage]
-Walter,
Crime Scene Investigator: Whoever it is, he enjoys it. It's possible the man
was dead with the first shot. The others were thrown in for good measure.
-Harry
Callahan: Well everybody has to pay something.
-Walter,
Crime Scene Investigator: Now, he'd have to be standing right here, this close.
Point-blank range. [Harry peers inside the car]
-Harry
Callahan: And the driver's license and a $100 dollar bill were out. Almost like
he was showing it to a traffic cop.
-Walter,
Crime Scene Investigator: Yeah. And from what we have it figures to be someone
impersonating a police officer. On the cars at least, it's been done before.
This close? It would have to be someone he would never recognize.
-Harry
Callahan: Or never suspect.

Magnum Force-1973
Smith &
Wesson Model 29
Inspector
"Dirty Harry" Callahan (Clint Eastwood) returns with his ".44
Magnum", a Smith & Wesson Model 29 with a 6 1/2" barrel as his
famous sidearm in the film. In the film, Callahan's .44 loads are in fact .44
Special, and not Magnums. He notes so by stating "It's a light Special.
This size gun it gives you better control and less recoil than a .357 Magnum
with wadcutters." Granted, in this context, the dialogue could have meant
that he used a 'light' .44 Magnum cartridge, possibly reloaded by himself;
however, with a commentary by director John Milius in the 2008 DVD release of
the Dirty Harry series, he states that the "light Special" line was in
fact a mistake in the script.
The film
marks the first time Callahan loses his trademark weapon, having surrendered it
to Lieutenant Briggs (Hal Holbrook) near the end of the film, and presumably
destroyed in a subsequent car explosion where it was left behind.

head clean off... Do you feel lucky?" Callahan's Model 29 during the

Colt Python
The four
motorcycle cops of the "death squad", Officers John Davis (David
Soul), Philip Sweet (Tim Matheson), "Red" Astrachan (Kip Niven) and
Michael Grimes (Robert Urich) carry 4" Colt Python revolvers, as do just
about every other officer of the SFPD. During the police shooting competition,
Davis lets Insp. Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) try out his Python, in which
he deliberately misses a target to analyze the slug with a ballistics
microscope. At the end of the film, Lt. Neil Briggs (Hal Holbrook), using a
Colt Python, confronts Callahan after losing his Model 19 Snub as well. In the
film, the guns are shown capable of having a suppressor attached by sliding it
onto the end of the barrel. Almost all revolvers have a gap between the barrel
and cylinder which allows gases to escape, as well as sound, meaning they
cannot be effectively suppressed. The device shown in the movie also seems to
be attached to the weapon purely by friction between the barrel and the long
side arms; it seems fairly likely that the first attempt to fire with it in
place would shoot the device off the end of the gun were it actually trapping
propellant gases rather than simply being a functionless barrel extension.

the film.
Albert
Popwell returns for his second role in the Dirty Harry series, this time
playing a pimp who is pulled over the day after he kills one of his own
prostitutes. His bribes prove useless against the officer, who quickly executes
him by shooting him five times - once in the neck and four times in the chest.
Notice the squib and fake skin on his neck used to show the first bullet's
impact.
The officer
smacks a suppressor on to his Colt Python before a hit. A silencer like the one
shown here would be ineffective in real life.

suppressor would not be effective.

During the
plane hijack, the two hijackers use Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolvers as
their weapons. When Insp. Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) infiltrates the plane
disguised as a pilot, he knocks out one of them and uses the gun to kill the
other hijacker as he flees. Another Model 10 is seen in the hands of a robber

robber is shot by Callahan. During the shootout outside Frank Palancio's (Tony
Giorgio) place with the police, one of Frank's men uses a hammerless
double-barreled shotgun, also sawed off. Due to continuity error, the gun fires
off three shots from only two barrels.

Background
Dirty Harry
is a 1971 film about a San Francisco cop with little regard for rules, but who
always gets results, tracking down a serial killer who snipes at random
victims.
Directed by
Don Siegel. Written by Harry Julian Fink, Rita M. Fink, Dean Riesner, Terrence
Malick (uncredited), and John Milius (uncredited).
Harry Callahan
-You gotta
be kidding. I don't got any time to break in any newcomers. Why don't you do
this boy a favor ... if I need a partner, I'll get me someone who knows what
the hell he's doin'.
-[to
Gonzalez] Sociology? Oh, you'll go far — that's if you live ... Just don't let
your college degree get you killed 'cause I'm liable to get killed along with
ya.
-Now you
know why they call me "Dirty Harry". I get every dirty job that comes
along.
-Gonzalez
was obeying orders from his superior, me ... he didn't know anything about it.
And when this mess is over, if he [the Chief] wants my badge, well, he can have
that too.
-I know what
you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell
you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as
this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow
your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel
lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?
Chico Gonzalez
-No wonder
they call him Dirty Harry. Always get the shit-end of the stick.
Scorpio
Killer
[in note
to the mayor] To the City of San Francisco, I will enjoy killing one person
every day until you pay me one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000). If you
agree say so tomorrow morning in Personal Column San Francisco Chronicle and I
will set up meeting. If I do not hear from you it will be my next pleasure to
kill a Catholic priest or a nigger. Scorpio
[in a
letter] The double-crossing San Francisco police made me do this. Now ransom
$200,000 in used 10s and 20s. One man with yellow bag, south side, Marina
Green, East Harbor, 9 p.m., she has oxygen until 3 a.m. tomorrow morning, red
panties and bra, nice tits, mole on left thigh. Anything cute and you'll force
me to let girl die of slow suffocation. Scorpio
[to
Callahan, on the phone] If I even think you're being followed, the girl dies.
If you talk to anyone, I don't care if it's a Pekinese pissing against a
lamppost, the girl dies ... No car. I give you a certain amount of time to go
from phone booth to phone booth. I ring four times. You don't answer by the
fourth ring, I hang up and that's the end of the game. The girl dies ... Cop!
... I hope you're not stupid.
[to
Callahan] Left hand. Let's see the gun.[Harry pulls out his .44 Magnum] My!
That's a big one.
[to
Callahan] No, don't pass out on me now cop! No, no, no, no, no. Do we understand each other? I said
do we understand each other? Listen up cop, I changed my mind. I'm going to let
her die, I just wanted you to know that.
[in the
hospital, with a battered face] They tried to frame me with the Deacon girl
murder, and now they're trying to murder me — and look at me, just look at me.
I'm supposed to be innocent until proven guilty and just look at what they did
to me. Everywhere I go, cops follow me — and just look at me.
[to a
school bus driver] Hear me, you old hag, I'm telling you to drive or I'll
decorate this bus with your brains.
[in a
note] To the City of San Francisco — You have double-crossed me for the last
time. I'm warning you to have my $200,000 dollars and a jet airplane ready and
waiting. I will call the Mayor's Office at one o'clock and tell you about the
hostages who I will be happy to kill if you don't do exactly what I say.
Scorpio.
Others
-Mayor: The
City of San Francisco does not pay criminals not to commit crimes. Instead, we
pay a police department.
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Just go where you're told, do what you're told, play it straight down
the line ... Nothing cute, nothing fancy. Just pay the ransom money and report
back here.
Dialogue
-Mayor: All
right, let's have it.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Have what?
-Mayor:
Your report. What have you been doing?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Oh, well for the past three quarters of an hour, I have been
sitting on my ass in your outer office, waiting on you.
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Dammit all, Harry, that's the Mayor you're talking to! ...
-Mayor:
Won't you sit down Inspector Callahan? ... There's a madman loose, I've asked
you what's being done, fair enough?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: We've got a dozen men checking identification files, checking
on all known extortionists, roof top prowlers, rifle nuts, peepers..
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Mr. Mayor — we've arranged for rooftop surveillance and helicopter
patrols especially around the Catholic churches and schools and in the black
areas.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Ballistics is checking on the slug. We're pretty sure it's a
.30-06, seven lands and grooves, right-hand twist ...
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Sir — we're running a computer check on everybody in the files whose
birthday falls between October 23rd and November 21st.
-Mayor:
Why?
-Insp. Harry
Callahan: Natives of Scorpio.
-Mayor:
Thank you Inspector. Have any of you mentioned this note to anyone? How about
you? (looking at Callahan)
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Nobody.
-Mayor:
Your wife, sweetheart, ... press?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Nobody.
-Mayor: All
right. Give the message to the Chronicle. We'll agree to pay, but we'll tell
him we need time to get the money together.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Wait a minute. Do I get this right? You're gonna play this
creep's game?
-Mayor:
It'll get us more breathing space.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: It also might get somebody killed. Why don't you let me meet
with the son-of-a-bitch?
-Chief: No,
none of that. You'd end up with a real blood-bath.
-Mayor: I
agree with the Chief. We'll do it this way, all right?
-Lt. Al
Bressler: Thank you Mr. Mayor. Come on Callahan, let's go.
-Mayor:
(calls out) Callahan.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Sir?
-Mayor: I
don't want any more trouble like you had last year in the Fillmore District.
Understand? That's my policy.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Yeah, well, when an adult male is chasing a female with intent
to commit rape, I shoot the bastard; that's my policy.
-Mayor:
Intent? How did you establish that?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a
butcher knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red
Cross.
-Mayor:
[after Callahan has left] I think he's got a point.
[Harry
visits his favorite diner]
-Jaffe: The
usual lunch or the usual dinner?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Well, what difference does that make?
-Jaffe: Not
much.
[long
pause]
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Hey Jaffe, is that tan Ford still parked across in front of the
bank?
-Jaffe: Tan
Ford ... Mmm mmm yeah. Tan Ford.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Engine running?
-Jaffe: I
don't know. How can I tell?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Exhaust fumes coming out of the tailpipe.
-Jaffe: Oh
my God, that's awful! Look at all that pollution.
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Yeah. Do me a favor. [gives him slip of paper] Call this
telephone number.
-Jaffe:
Police department?
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Yeah. Tell them Inspector Callahan thinks there's a 211 in
progress at the bank. Be sure and tell them that's in progress.
-Jaffe: In
progress. Yes sir.
[goes to
phone and starts dialing]
-Insp.
Harry Callahan: Now, if they'll just wait for the cavalry to arrive.
[immediately, an alarm bell goes off and a gunshot is heard] Ah, shit!
[After
shooting several of the bank-robbers and stopping their getaway car by shooting
the driver, Inspector Callahan approaches the front steps of the bank. The bank
robber that Callahan shot first, wounding him and forcing him to drop his
shotgun, now makes an effort to retrieve it. He pauses as he sees Callahan
approach, aiming his revolver.]
-Callahan:
I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track
myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world,
and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question:
'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?
[The thief
gives up trying to retrieve his shotgun; Callahan picks it up and starts to
walk away.]
-Thief:
Hey! [Callahan turns around] I gots to know!
[Callahan
aims his revolver and pulls the trigger, but the gun just clicks on an empty
chamber, and he grins, laughs, and walks away.]
-Thief: Son
of a bitch!
-Doctor:
Sure, Harry. We can save the leg. [takes out some scissors]
-Callahan:
What are you going to do with those?
-Doctor:
Going to cut your pants off.
-Callahan:
No. I'll take them off.
-Doctor:
It'll hurt.
-Callahan:
For $29.50, let it hurt. You can turn your back if you're embarrassed ...
-Gonzales:
Why do they call ya "Dirty Harry"?
-De
Georgio: That's one thing about our Harry, he doesn't play any favorites. Harry
hates everybody. Limeys, Micks, Hebs, Niggers, Honkies,Fat Daigoes, Chinks, you
name it.
-Gonzales:
How does he feel about Mexicans?
-De
Georgio: Ask him.
-Callahan: (says
with a wink) Especially Spics.
-Callahan:
These loonies. They ought to throw a net over the whole bunch of 'em.
-Gonzales:
I know what you mean.
-Pedestrian:
Hey, fruitcake, what do you think you're doing?
-Callahan:
Get the hell out of the way, hammerhead.
-Thug 1:
What's in the bag, man?
-Callahan:
You dudes get lost now, ya hear?
-Thug 2:
Screw the bag.
-Thug 1:
Yeah, just give us the wallet now.
-Callahan:
[pulling his gun] You don't listen too good, do ya, asshole?
-Callahan:
I'm Callahan.
-Young Man:
My friends call me Alice, but I'll take a dare.
-Callahan:
Well, Alice, when was the last time you were busted?
-Young Man:
If you're vice, I'll kill myself.
-Callahan:
Well, do it at home!
-Gonzalez:
[about quitting the force] I've been doing a lot of thinking about it. I have a
teaching credential and I figure, what for, you know?
[pause]
-Gonzalez's
wife: I thought I could take it ... Whatever it takes to be a cop's wife, I'm
just not sure I'm making it. He really tries and these bastards, you know, Pig
this, Pig that. Ah, but maybe it's when I watch him walk out that door at
night, and I think, what if this is the last time I ever see him again ...
doesn't it drive your wife crazy?
-Callahan:
Nope.
-Gonzalez's
wife: You mean she got used to it.
-Callahan:
No, she never did really.
-Gonzalez's
wife: Well, what then?
-Callahan:
She's dead.
-Gonzalez's
wife: Oh, please forgive me.
-Callahan:
She was driving home late one night and a drunk crossed the center line. There
was no reason for it, really.
-Gonzalez's
wife: I'm so sorry.
-Callahan:
That's o.k. Look, I want you to tell Chico that I understand, you know, him
quitting. I-I think he's right. This is no life for you two.
-Gonzalez's
wife: Why do you stay in it then?
-Callahan:
I don't know, I really don't.
-De
Georgio: Illegal entry, no warrant.
-Callahan:
Looks like we climb.
-De
Georgio: Uh-uh. Too much linguine. I'll find another way.
-De
Georgio: You need any help?
-Callahan:
Go on out and get some air, fatso.
-De
Georgio: You're the boss.
-Scorpio: No, no, no, no. Don't do anything more. You tried to kill me ... Please no more, I'm
hurt, can't you see I'm hurt? You shot me, please don't, don't! Let me have a
doctor ... Please give me the doctor, don't kill me.
-Callahan:
The girl, where is she?
-Scorpio:
You tried to kill me!
-Callahan:
If I tried that, your head'd be splattered all over this field. Now where's the
girl?
-Scorpio: I
want a lawyer!
-Callahan:
I said, where's the girl?
-Scorpio: I
have the right for a lawyer.
-Callahan:
Where's the girl?
-Scorpio: I
have the right for a lawyer, don't shoot me, I have rights, want a lawyer.
-District
Attorney: I've just been looking over your arrest report. A very unusual piece
of police work. Really amazing.
-Callahan:
Yeah, well I had some luck.
-District
Attorney: You're lucky I'm not indicting you for assault with intent to commit
murder.
-Callahan:
What?!
-District
Attorney: Where the hell does it say you've got a right to kick down doors,
torture suspects, deny medical attention and legal counsel. Where have you
been? Does Escobedo ring a bell? Miranda? I mean, you must have heard of the
Fourth Amendment. What I'm saying is, that man had rights.
-Callahan:
Well, I'm all "broken up" about that man's rights.
-District
Attorney: You should be. I've got news for you, Callahan. As soon as he's well
enough to leave the hospital, he walks.
-Callahan:
What are you talking about?
-District
Attorney: He's free.
-Callahan:
You mean you're letting him go?
-District
Attorney: We have to, we can't try him.
-Callahan:
And why is that?
-District
Attorney: Because I'm not wasting a half a million dollars of the taxpayer's
money on a trial we can't possibly win. The problem is, we don't have any
evidence.
-Callahan:
Evidence? What the hell do you call that? [He gestures toward Scorpio's weapon]
-District
Attorney: I call it nothing, zero.
-Callahan:
Are you trying to tell me that Ballistics can't match the bullet up to this
rifle?
-District
Attorney: It does not matter what Ballistics can do. This rifle might make a
nice souvenir. But it's inadmissible as evidence.
-Callahan:
And who says that?
-District
Attorney: It's the law.
-Callahan:
Well then, the law is crazy!
-District
Attorney: This is Judge Bannerman of the appellate court. He also holds classes
in Constitutional Law in Berkeley. I've asked him for an opinion — your Honor?
-Judge
Bannerman: Well, in my opinion, the search of the suspect's quarters was
illegal. Evidence obtained thereby, such as that hunting rifle, for instance,
is inadmissible in court. You should have gotten a search warrant. I'm sorry,
but it's that simple.
-Callahan:
Search warrant!? There was a girl dying.
-District
Attorney: She was in fact dead according to the medical report.
-Callahan:
But I didn't know that.
-Judge: The
court would have to recognize the police officer's legitimate concern for the
girl's life, but there is no way they can possibly condone police torture. All
evidence concerning the girl — the suspect's confession, all physical evidence
— would have to be excluded.
-Callahan:
(sighs) There must be something you can get him on.
-Judge:
Without the evidence of the gun and the girl, (half chuckles) I couldn't
convict him of spitting on the sidewalk. No, the suspect's rights were
violated, under the Fourth and Fifth and probably the Sixth and Fourteenth
Amendments.
-Callahan:
And Anne Marie Deacon, what about her rights? I mean, she's raped and left in a
hole to die. Who speaks for her?
-District
Attorney: The District Attorney's office, if you'll let us. I've got a wife and
three kids. I don't want him on the streets any more than you do.
-Callahan:
Well, he won't be out there long.
-District
Attorney: What is that supposed to mean?
-Callahan:
I mean sooner or later he's gonna stub his toe and then I'll be right there.
-District
Attorney: This office won't stand for any harassment.
-Callahan:
You know, you're crazy if you think you've heard the last of this guy. He's
gonna kill again.
-District
Attorney: How do you know?
-Callahan:
'Cause he likes it.
-Chief:
Have you been following that man?
-Callahan:
Yeah, I've been following him on my own time. And anybody can tell I didn't do
that to him.
-Chief:
How?
-Callahan:
Cause he looks too damn good, that's how!
-Mayor: (on
phone) The jet must be fueled and ready to go in a half an hour. Skeleton crew,
they must be volunteers. Tell them the man is dangerous. Well, here, I'll read
you this note which was delivered at eight o'clock this morning: "To the
City of San Francisco. You have double-crossed me for the last time. I'm
warning you to have my $200,000 in a jet airplane ready and waiting. I will call
Mayor's office at one o'clock and tell you about the hostages who I will be
happy to kill if you don't do exactly what I say, Scorpio" (pauses) Well,
you better have somebody standing by — it could be a false alarm but don't
count on it.
-Scorpio:
It's very simple. I've got the kids and you start screwing around, the kids
start dying. Is the plane ready?
-Mayor: The
jet is being fueled and ready to go at the airport. The money will be there by
the time you get there.
-Scorpio:
All right, now listen and listen very carefully. I'm going to be driving along
nice and easy, just me and a bus load of kids. I'm going to turn off on the Sir
Francis Drake Blvd. on my way to the Santa Rosa Airport. I don't want to see
any police cars, helicopters, whatever. Now if you got the guts to play this
game by the rules, the kids will have a nice little plane ride.
-Mayor:
Well, where are you going?
-Scorpio:
I'll tell the pilot when I get on the plane. No alerts, nothin'.
-Mayor: I
guarantee you you will not be molested in any way. I give you my word of honor
on it.
-Chief:
Callahan? — you willing to take the money to him?
-Callahan:
When are you people gonna stop messing around with this guy. He's gotta be
stopped now.
-Mayor:
He's got a bus load of kids and I can't take that chance. I gave my word of
honor on it, and he will not be molested — and that's a direct order, Callahan!
-Callahan:
Well, you can just get yourself another delivery boy.
-Scorpio:
[singing] Row, row, row your boat/gently down the stream/merrily, merrily,
merrily, merrily ...
-Bus Kid:
Where are we going?
-Scorpio:
What? What did you say?
-Bus Kid:
Where are we going?
-Scorpio:
We're going to the ice-cream factory and see how ice-cream's made. Now anybody
who doesn't wanna go can get off right here.
-Bus Kid: I
wanna go home to my mommy.
-Scorpio:
[slaps the kid] Stupid kid! Come on sing everyone! Sing or I'll go home and
kill all your mommies, sing, sing!
-Callahan:
I know what you're thinkin', punk. You're thinkin' did he fire six shots or
only five? Now to tell you the truth, I've forgotten myself in all this
excitement. But bein' this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the
world, and it'll blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a
question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?!

Dirty Harry
(1971)
Smith &
Wesson Model 29
The now
iconic revolver carried by Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint
Eastwood) in the film is a Smith & Wesson Model 29 with a 8 3/8"
barrel, chambered in .44 Magnum. As the script originally called for a Smith
& Wesson Model 29 with a 4" barrel, this eventually proved troublesome
for the filmmakers, since the Model 29 was no longer in production at the time.
Before shooting began, Eastwood contacted Bob Sauer (then a representative for
Smith & Wesson) to acquire the gun for the film. It was a challenge, but
Fred Miller at the plant had a couple assembled from parts eventually. To
better familiarize himself with the weapon's handling and recoil, Eastwood took
one to a gun range and fired live rounds through it. Unlike the gun in the
script, the only barrels acquired for the guns in this film were the 8
3/8" barrel and the 6 1/2" barrel. Both can be seen used in some
scenes. The blanks it fired were custom made since the 5-in-1 blank didn't fit
the chambers. It is said scriptwriter John Milius was presented with one of the
actual guns used in the film as a gift later on. As for Harry's line in the film
about the .44 Magnum being "the most powerful handgun in the world",
one should note that even in the 1970s, the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge had
been eclipsed in size and power by the .454 Casull round, however, the first
widely available commercially sold revolver chambered for the 454 Casull would
not come for another ten years, so his statement for the time frame is
accurate.

"Halt!"
Insp. Harry Callahan levels his Smith & Wesson 29 on robbers. It was hard
to get a shot where he didn't look bad because he has a mouthful of hotdog.
Insp.
Callahan checks his leg wound after being hit by a shotgun's birdshot. What's
funny is that there are no holes in his pants and the "blood" appears
to be red paint.
I know what
you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five?' Well, to tell the truth,
in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a
.44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head
clean off, you better ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya
punk?"

continuity error, the alternate angle shows him pull the trigger in double
action.

Winchester
Model 70
A
Winchester Model 70 chambered in .458 Winchester Magnum is used by Insp.
"Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) in a failed attempt to kill
the Scorpio Killer (Andrew Robinson) on the rooftops over looking the church.
The .458's parabolic trajectory and immense recoil would make it an exceedingly
poor choice for use as a long distance counter-sniper rifle, but it is
consistent with Callahan's preference for massive overkill.

One of the

appears to be a standard Winchester Model 70 in .30-06.
Callahan is
presented the .458 Magnum Model 70 by The Chief (John Larch), which is said
capable of killing an elephant. For someone like Callahan, this is an obvious
choice since "overkill" is pretty much his middle name.

yet he manages to fire off six shots in total without reloading.

The Bank
Robber at the start of the film, being played by Albert Popwell (who would play
four separate roles in the Dirty Harry series) wounds Insp. Callahan (Clint
Eastwood) with a shot from his Winchester Model 12, but is disarmed during the
famous "Do I feel lucky?" scene.

Insp. Chico
Gonzalez (Reni Santoni) is seen using what appears to be a Colt Detective
Special as his sidearm in the film, but both scenes when he fires it take place
in almost complete
darkness.

MP40
The Scorpio

as his sniper rifle, along with some spare magazines. He uses it to shoot at
Insp. Callahan (Clint Eastwood) and Insp. Chico Gonzalez (Reni Santoni) during
the shootout on the rooftops. Later he fires it at Insp. Gonzales during the
fight at the base of the Mt. Davidson Cross.

Walther P38
The Liquor
Store Owner (James Nolan) shows the Scorpio Killer (Andrew Robinson) his
Walther P38 pistol, which he brags he used to stop several attempted robberies.
Unfortunately for him Scorpio hits him with a liquor bottle and takes the gun
from him, and carries it up to the climax of the film.

7.7mm
Arisaka Type 2 Paratrooper Takedown rifle
The Scorpio
Killer (Andrew Robinson) uses an 7.7mm Arisaka Type 02 Paratrooper Takedown
rifle as his weapon of choice to kill random people in San Francisco. The rifle
is fitted with a Hiram Maxim 1900's style suppressor, and rechambered in
.30-06. The rifle is also placed in a sporting style stock.
(Note: Many
Arisaka Battle rifles were 'sporterized' in the decades after World War II. For
several decades after WW2, the Arisaka rifle was cheap and had no collector
value. The value of the Imperial weapons skyrocketed in the 1990s. It is ironic
that someone sporterized a 7.7mm paratrooper take down rifle, since now it is
one of the rarest and most valuable battle rifles of World War II. An
unmodified version is worth thousands of dollars. The sporterized version as
seen in the movie is relatively worthless from a collector standpoint).

in the District Attorney's office. Harry acquires this firearm in a warrantless
search. As such, they claim the gun gives no aid to the case, since it is
inadmissible as evidence ("fruit of the poisonous tree"). On another
note, if the rifle is a foreign Curio Relic 'bring back gun' from the war, that
was later sporterized, it can also have no paper trail at all.
Evidence:
the spent rifle round
Callahan
finds a "thirty-ought-six" shell casing on the roof. When snipers use
bolt action guns, they usually don't eject the spent shell and reveal crucial
ballistic evidence, although it is assumed he leaves the shell casing
intentionally as a taunt to the police.
